Baseball Drops Game One 7-4 At Loyola Marymount

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (March 28, 2013 – www.GoZags.com) – No. 21 Gonzaga University baseball dropped game one of its three-game series 7-4 to Loyola Marymount University Thursday at Page Stadium. The Bulldogs put together 11 hits but a two-run sixth inning and a three-run seventh gave LMU the come from behind victory. 

Gonzaga moves to 15-9-1 overall and 4-3 in the West Coast Conference. The Lions improve to 12-13 and 4-3 WCC.

The Zags trailed 2-0 after the first two innings but scored in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning to take in a 4-2 lead.  In the fourth it was a Caleb Wood RBI double to bring in the first Bulldog run and in the fifth a Clayton Eslick RBI double knotted the game up.

With one out, Wood walked to start the two-run sixth inning for Gonzaga. Wood stole second and was brought home on a two out Cabe Reiten single to left center field. Mitchell Gunsolus would single advancing Reiten to second before Nicholas Minteer hit an RBI single up the middle giving GU the lead.

However, the Lions would quickly rally and tie the game in their half of the sixth. With runners on first and second, Reiten made an error at shortstop to allow the two runs to score and Lion David Edwards to reach second base.

Loyola Marymount took the lead and added two insurance runs in the seventh capped off by a Tommy Cheek RBI single to centerfield.

Marco Gonzales (4-2) was credited with the loss after throwing 6 innings. Gonzales gave up seven runs, five earned, while striking out four Lions. LMU starter Colin Welmon was chased after 5.2 innings and gave up nine hits and four runs.

Arturo Reyes and Derek Peterson also made relief appearances for the Zags, each throwing an inning.

Gunsolus, who went 2-for-5, improved his reaching base safely streak to 22 consecutive games.

Three Zags had multi-hit games; Gunsolus, Cory LeBrun, Travis Forbes and Wood all with two hits each.

Gonzaga wraps up its series with the Lions Sunday with a doubleheader. Game one begins at 10 a.m. with game two starting 30 minutes after.
