GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Catcher Jesus Montero went 3-for-3 with a grand slam and 6 RBI and right-handed pitcher Brandon Maurer turned in 5.0 scoreless innings to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 16-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds Monday afternoon in Cactus League play at Goodyear Ballpark.

The Mariners improved to 19-10 with the victory, the third-most wins in spring club history (20 in 1999, 21 in 1994).

Montero (Grand Slam in the 5th inning) and Michael Saunders (solo HR in the 4th) both homered, giving the Mariners a MLB leading and spring club record 52 home runs. The old Mariners record was 51 home runs in 32 games in 1999.

The Mariners tied their spring highs in runs scored and hits, with five players recording multi-hit games. First baseman Justin Smoak continued his torrid spring going 2-for-2 with a double, 3 runs scored, 3 RBI and 2 walks. In 16 Cactus League games Smoak is batting .431 (22x51) with 11 runs scored, 8 doubles, 4 home runs and 14 RBI (1.297 OPS).

Montero (3x3, R, HR, 6 RBI), Saunders (3x4, 3 R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI), Robert Andino (2x6, 2 R, 2B, RBI) and Jason Bay (2x5, R, 2B, RBI) contributed multi-hit games.

Maurer scattered six hits, allowed one walk and struck out seven batters in his 5.0 scoreless innings. The 2012 Southern League Most Outstanding Pitcher is now 3-1 with a 0.90 ERA (2 ER, 20.0 IP, 22 K) in six Cactus League appearances. Oliver Perez, Carter Capps, Lucas Luetge and Stephen Pryor closed out the shutout each with scoreless innings.

The Mariners (19-10) return to Cactus League play tomorrow hosting the Kansas City Royals (21-6-1) at Peoria Stadium (1:05 pm). The game will be broadcast on 710 ESPN Seattle and the Mariners Radio Network. Right-hander Jeremy Bonderman (2-0, 7.20) is scheduled to appear in his fifth Cactus League game and third start against Royals left-hander Bruce Chen.
