Hughson Shuts Out Kamloops

Posted: Updated:

Spokane used a sterling effort from rookie goaltender Garret Hughson and a pair of goals in the span of just 24-seconds to defeat Kamloops 2-0 in front of 8,773 fans at the Spokane Arena Saturday night. Hughson turned away all 32 shots he faced and Todd Fiddler picked up a goal and an assist as the Chiefs improved to 21-9-1-0 at home and 36-24-2-0 overall.

Kamloops recorded the game's first six shots before the Chiefs were able to break through the Blazers defense. Spokane was in control the rest of the period with four power play chances but they couldn't light the lamp against Cole Cheveldave and the contest remained scoreless after 20 minutes. The Chiefs outshot the Blazers 10-9 for the period.

Spokane got on the board for the first time midway through the second with Blake Gal firing a shot into the back of the net on an assist from Fiddler at 10:18. It took Fiddler just 24-seconds to score a goal of his own, as he beat Cheveldave top shelf at 10:42 with assists from Dylan Walchuk and Hughson. Spokane's netminder turned away all 14 shots he faced in the period to preserve the Chiefs 2-0 advantage.

The Blazers remained on the attack in the third period as they outshot the Chiefs 9-4, but Hughson proved up to the challenge as he stopped all nine Kamloops shots on the way to his second shutout of the season.

Hughson was perfect on 32 save opportunities while Cheveldave was 19 of 21 for Kamloops. Spokane went 0 of 5 on the power play and 3 for 3 on the penalty kill.

Tonight's three stars: Garret Hughson (1st), Blake Gal (2nd), and Todd Fiddler (3rd)

The Chiefs embark on a three game road trip starting in Everett on Wednesday before returning home on March 6th to host the Seattle Thunderbirds for TicketsWest Player Magnet Giveaway Night.
