Americans assist local youth hockey

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, Wash. -- Over the past decade the Tri-City Americans have done their part to ensure hockey is passed down to the next generation. A few times a month the Americans lend a stick and a hand assisting at local youth hockey practices.

"When I was little I remember watching the Kootenay Ice and them coming out to our practices and it was just really exciting to have them so its nice to give back to them. They get excited when we're out there it's fun to play along with," Americans forward Ryan Chynoweth said.

The Americans know they are a big reason why youth hockey has a strong showing in the Tri-Cities. Over 400 kids participate.

"I actually started watching them when I was really little and then that kind of motivated me," Tri-City Junior American Traver Bills said.

"It's great I mean a lot of them are the inspiration for the kids and the reason why they're on the ice in the first place. So it's nice to see them out and they give them little pointers," Junior Americans coach Clint Sexton added, going on to say, "Sometimes they'll come out and do one of their favorite drills because they had a goalie out there and it's always nice to have goal tender help."

"Not too much just kind of hop in with the drills and give pointers when we can and when we see something wrong...pretty much just have fun out there with them and make their time enjoyable," Chynoweth said.

If you'd like to get your child involved in hockey contact the Tri-City Amateur Hockey Association.
