Scott Hackney is a Gulf War Veteran and a recovering alcoholic. He also teaches people how to ski at Mt. Spokane. Oh, he also has Lou Gehrig's disease.

Hackney said the first symptoms of ALS came on long ago when he had pains in his arms and legs. Later, he noticed a muscle in his hand was gone. An official diagnosis came several years later.

Despite the fact he can't do simple things like sign his name or even hold ski poles, he continues to come to the mountain to teach not only skiing, but also perseverance and patience.

"Most people are in a wheelchair at one to three years, and they are dead at five," Hackney explained. "Not me."
