Morning Drive: Wrestling Out, Bone in Trouble, Olynyk's Cool Hair

As I transition my position at SWX away from the day-to-day publishing duties to a more administrative role, I am going to attempt to do something I have always wanted to do for the SWX website. Rarely did I have the time to publish something along the lines of a morning briefing, so I didn't do it. I don't know if I will have the time now, but why not try it?

You see, that is the fun thing about working with the Internet. We can try things for a while, and if they don't work, they don't work. No harm, no foul as they say.

So here is Day 1 of the Morning Drive, which will consist of some of the more interesting things happening in the wide world of sports. Some comments and links will deal directly with local teams and sports. Others will have nothing to do with the Northwest but will be of interesting anyway. And some of what I highlight will be of little or no interest to you, the reader. But hey, it's the Internet. If you don't want to read it, don't read it.

The IOC (International Olympic Committee) decided to scrap wrestling for the 2020 Olympics. What? Rulon Gardner is turning in his grave. Wait, he's still alive? In any case, it is sad to see a sport removed from the Olympics. My question is: why not badminton or pentathlon?

In the college-athletes-gone-bad department: four Alabama football players were arrested on charges of fraud and robbery on Monday. All four were backups for the Tide. What is it about that place? (Roll Tide, Roll!)

In the Gonzaga department, USA Today seemingly just cursed the Zags with an article titled "Is this the year Gonzaga breaks through to Final Four?" Let the angst begin. Can the Zags do it, or will they bow out after the Sweet 16 – again?

Another USA Today article highlights Kelly Olynyk. Yes, his hair is mentioned, as is his decision to redshirt and whether he has a future in the NBA. It is recommended reading for even the casual Zags fan.

For Washington State fans, it's that time of year already when pundits question the future of basketball coach Ken Bone. Paul Buker has this piece on OregonLive.com.

Whitworth fell from No. 3 to No. 12 in the latest DIII rankings. They lost twice last week but still have a chance to win the Northwest Conference title outright this week.

Lastly, the district tournament begins tonight for the Greater Spokane League and the Mid-Columbia Conference. SWX will air a total of four games tonight between Tri-Cities and Spokane. And yes, all four games will also be streamed online. Enjoy!

Reviewing OOTP '15, Mariners Still Break Hearts in Baseball Video Game

This lengthy build-up leads me to one sincere question: Did the 2001 season doom the Seattle Mariners franchise? If the M's had won the World Series that year, would we be talking about a dynasty? Out of the Park Baseball 15 allows baseball fans to answer that question.
