Is This The Year? Gonzaga Cracks Top 5 In Nation

Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

Another week, another climb up the polls for the Gonzaga Bulldogs.  With convincing wins over Pepperdine and LMU over the weekend, combined with four of the five teams in the top five losing, the Bulldogs are now ranked 5th in the nation according to the Associated Press, third in the country in the coaches' poll.

Gonzaga's 23 wins are the most in the country, while their two losses are tied for the fewest, which might explain why they received two first place votes in this week's AP poll, while garnering one in the Coaches' poll.

In case you're wondering, the Bulldog's highest ranking ever came back in the 2003-'04 season. Adam Morrison, Blake Stepp, Ronny Turiaf, Derek Raivio, and others led the Zags to 3rd in the AP poll and 2nd in the Coaches' poll.

This begs the question, is this the year Gonzaga finally makes their first trip to the Final Four? Obviously too early to tell, and they no doubt have their sights set on a road trip to Saint Mary's this coming Thursday.  But if the Bulldogs continue to win, and teams keep falling in front of them, Gonzaga might just end up besting that '03-'04 ranking.  But ask any 'Zag fan, it's what happens in March that really matters.
