By the Spokane Chiefs
The Chiefs scored three first period goals and never looked back as they collected the 1,000th victory in franchise history with a 5-0 win over Kelowna in front of 3,469 fans at the Spokane Arena Wednesday night. Eric Williams stopped all 33 shots he faced while Todd Fiddler and Mike Aviani each added three points as the Chiefs improved to 17-9-0-0 at home and 31-20-2-0 overall.
Spokane took command early in the first as Riley Whittingham found the back of the net after putting on a clinic in puck handling with an assist from Fiddler at 5:29. The Chiefs scored again just over a minute and half later with Mitch Holmberg beating Jordon Cooke on an assist from Adam Helewka at the 6:21 mark.
Spokane capped the first period scoring with a goal from Aviani at 15:42 off a gorgeous feed from Fiddler. The Chiefs outshot the Rockets 16-10 for the period.
Kelowna switched goaltenders to start to the second period but it made no difference as the Chiefs continued their offensive barrage. Fiddler scored Spokane's fourth goal at the 9:33 mark as he raced down the ice and beat Jackson Whistle with assists from Brenden Kichton and Aviani.
The Chiefs took a 5-0 lead at 10:53 on a power play goal from Kichton who was assisted by Aviani and Holmberg. Williams again kept the Rockets scoreless, turning away 14 shots in the second period.
Spokane and Kelowna traded shots in the third but neither team scored as the Rockets outshot the Chiefs 9-6 for the period.
Kelowna's Cooke was 13-16 and Whistle was 20-22 on save opportunities. The Chiefs went 1 of 3 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.
Tonight's three stars: Eric Williams (1st), Todd Fiddler (2nd), Mike Aviani (3rd).
Spokane, which joined the WHL in 1985, garnered the 1,000th win in franchise history in its 1,997th game. The Chiefs have lost 838 games and 159 have ended in a tie, shootout loss or overtime loss.
