Whitworth Pushes Past Lewis-Clark State College

Posted: Updated:

LEWISTON, Idaho - The Whitworth women's basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 68-53 win over Lewis-Clark State College in the Lewis-Clark State College Activity Center on Sunday afternoon.

Whitworth improves to 9-2, while Lewis-Clark State College falls to 3-13.

"We played as good of a first half as we have all year, both offensively and defensively," Whitworth head coach Helen Higgs said. "We responded well in the second half to Lewis-Clark State College's pressure."

The Pirates jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but the Warriors responded with their own 5-0 run to tie the game up in the early going. Senior Emily Guthrie hit a three to put the Bucs ahead. Whitworth took a 45-21 lead into halftime.

Though Whitworth never trailed in the game, Lewis-Clark State opened the second half with a 21-13 run and cut into Whitworth's lead. The Warriors forced 11 Pirate turnovers in second half, but were only able to convert them into 10 points. After going 3-3 in the first half—including 2-2 from the behind the arc, senior Lauren Picha went 2-4 in the second half and sank another three-pointer in the second half to secure Whitworth's win.

Whitworth held a 46-42 edge on the glass, pulling down 13 offensive rebounds that led to 10 second-chance points. The Bucs turned 19 Warrior turnovers into 15 points.

The Pirates tied a season high by sinking nine three-pointers in the first half and finished the game with 14 threes, shooting 56 percent from beyond the arc in the game. With the win, the Bucs gave Coach Higgs her first victory against the Warriors.

Lauren Picha led the Pirates with 13 points. Emily Guthrie and freshman KC McConnell each added 12 points for the Bucs. Guthrie grabbed a game-high 10 boards to lead Whitworth in rebounding. McConnell and junior Jamie Lyons each pulled down seven rebounds. Redshirt junior Emily Travis dished out a career-high 10 assists.

"Emily (Guthrie)'s 10 rebounds and Emily (Travis') 10 assists were big for us," Higgs said. "Ten rebounds for a guard is not common and were a big help."

Tanis Fuller led the Warriors with a game-high 17 points. Annie Kane chipped in 10 points for Lewis-Clark State. McKenzie Heaslet led the Warriors with eight rebounds, while Loree Hill pulled down six boards.

Next up, Whitworth will travel to Pacific (Ore.) to take on the Boxers on Friday, January 4 at 6:00 PM.
