The New Orleans Hornets could become the New Orleans Pelicans as soon as next season (Steve Mitchell/MGN)
Goodbye, New Orleans Hornets. Hello, New Orleans Pelicans. The team is expected to change its name as early as the 2013-14 season, according to a report published by Yahoo Sports.
USA Today Reported the name change isn't a done deal, and that any change would still need to be approved by the NBA.
The reported name change comes after Tom Benson purchased the team back in April. He owns the rights to the Pelicans nickname. And Louisiana is The Pelican State. There might also be a change in color scheme. According to the report, Benson's wife likes navy blue, red and gold.
As odd as the Pelicans might sound, I suppose it isn't too much different from the Utah Jazz. Believe me, as someone who grew up around Salt Lake City, there isn't much Jazz there. There aren't any lakes in Los Angeles, either. When was the last time Sacramento had a king? Are there any bulls roaming the streets of Chicago these days?
I'm just saying.
Still, I'm not a fan of Pelicans, even if ESPN's DJ Gallo calls it a good choice.
