Mariners Sign Former Zag Jason Bay

Updated:

Former Gonzaga outfielder Jason Bay is returning to Washington state to play for the Seattle Mariners.

The Associated Press confirmed the signing through a source who spoke on condition of anonymity because there was no announcement by the team.

Bay was cut by the New York Mets after signing a four-year $66 million contract. He had one year remaining. He hit just .165 with eight home runs and 20 RBI last season but was hampered by concussions and rib injuries.

Bay, now 34-years-old, lives in Kirkland, Wash. He left Gonzaga in 1999 and was drafted by the Montreal Expos in 2000. He played for the Padres, Pirates and Red Sox before signing a massive contract with the Mets in 2010.
