Idaho Women Fall Short At Lady Griz Classic

By Univ. Idaho Athletics

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Idaho women's basketball team couldn't hang on to a double-digit second half lead in its third game in four days, falling 69-64 to Tennessee State in its final game at the Lady Griz Classic in Missoula, Mont.

The Vandals (1-6) led by 13 points at 28-15 with six and a half minutes to play in the first half, but Tennessee State chipped away, and eventually tied the game at 53-all with just under eight minutes to play. The Vandals briefly regained the lead on a 3-pointer from Christina Salvatore with 4:37 to play, but TSU's Jasmin Shuler answered with a 3-pointer of her own and the Tigers led the rest of the way.

With both teams grabbing 50 rebounds and shooting similar percentages from the field, Idaho 33 percent and TSU 34 percent, the biggest difference in the game was turnovers. The Vandals gave the ball away 14 times in the game, while Tennessee State had just seven turnovers and TSU out-scored Idaho 14-9 in points off turnovers.

Tennessee State also out-scored Idaho 18-9 in second-chance points and 38-26 in the paint. After connecting on 4-of-10 3-point attempts in the first half, Idaho went just 3-of-16 from long range in the second, finishing the game at 27 percent from 3-point distance.

The Vandals jumped out to a fast start, taking a 12-2 lead, and stayed ahead by double figures for a majority of the first half. Idaho led 30-19 with 3:23 remaining in the first when the Tigers went on a 7-0 run to close the half, cutting Idaho's lead to four at 30-26.

The Vandals built their lead back to 10 points and 46-36 with 13 minutes to play, but Tennessee State used a 10-2 run to take the lead and the momentum at the end.

Three Vandals scored a team-high 12 points for Idaho, including Alyssa Charlston, Christina Salvatore and Stacey Barr. Charlston had her second double-double of the season adding a game-high 15 rebounds in the contest. Krissy Karr finished with five points, six rebounds and seven assists for Idaho, with just one turnover. Ali Forde also chipped in with six rebounds for the Vandals.

Two Tennessee State players had double-doubles in the game as Simone Hopes finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds while Kesi Hess added 15 points and 12 boards.

Idaho returns to action with a pair of games in California next week, visiting UC Irvin and UC Riverside on Dec. 5 and 7.
