AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. – Teams from around the state participated in the tip-off banquet for the second annual Dan Fitzgerald Memorial Basketball Tournament Thursday at the Northern Quest Resort and Casino.
Basketball legends such as Jud Heathcote and Dan Monson attended the event to honor their friend and show support for the tournament and its cause.
The banquet featured a three-point contest won by West Valley's Tyler Stavnes, and Fitzgerald's longtime friend and coaching colleague Dick Davey served as the keynote speaker.
"Dan was unique. There aren't too many people in this country who are like him," Davey said. "First of all, I think he's the finest basketball coach I've ever been around. But he's also the most competitive individual I've ever been around; the most compassionate individual I've ever been around. So he had all the qualities you are looking for in somebody. I'm not surprised that his legacy is still living on."
The tournament begins at 4:00 p.m. Friday when Mead takes on Lake Stevens.
