Prosser Playing in Another State Semi-Final

Posted: Updated:

PROSSER, Wash. - It's now the third week in November, and as usual the Prosser Mustangs are still playing football.

One point, that's all that separated Othello and Prosser in a Washington state quarter final and CWAC rematch.

"They just jumped off sides twice we're at the one yard line. I said ok lets call a time out, so we call a time out and look at our play list and we've got some stuff that looks really good for one yard," described Benji Sonnichsen, Prosser head coach.

But getting deep into the playoffs is nothing new for the mustangs, they've been to the quarterfinals 19 times in the last 22 years.

"I think that we got some early momentum in the years and now we just kept it going. Kids are expected, they come up, you know they're working hard and they want to carry on the tradition," said Sonnichsen.

"We keep pushing players from when we're little guys you know. We look up to, I looked up to my brother when he was in high school. So I just want to be where he's at you know, just going to state," added Bubba Frank, Prosser Senior running back.

Now the No. 4 team in the state must turn their attention to a Tumwater squad that's also used to success, they won a state title in 2010.

"Well they have a really big defensive line. You know there real big across the front and they get off the football real fast," said Sonnichsen about Tumwater. "Which they're going to guess right sometimes and make some big plays but then at the same time you see on film they give up big plays."

SWX will broadcast the 5 p.m. Prosser state semi-final on Digital Channel 25.3 in the Tri-Cities, 23.3 in Yakima and on Charter channel 287.
