On an opening weekend in which the Big Sky Conference was unable to come up with a victory versus a NCAA Division I men's basketball opponent, Eastern Washington University's Martin Seiferth had an individual performance worth remembering.

The 6-foot-10 transfer from the University of Oregon has been selected as the first Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for the 2012-13 season after he scored 27 points with 17 rebounds and a school-record seven blocks in EWU's 96-79 loss to Cal State Northridge on Monday (Nov. 12).

The seven blocked shots broke the school record that stood for more than 25 years. Dexter Griffen had six blocked shots during a 1987 game against Idaho State. Seiferth's 17 rebounds was the sixth-best recorded performance in Eastern history.

"Martin is only a sophomore, and to receive this award is a great honor for him," said second-year Eastern head coach Jim Hayford. "He epitomizes our team – he's young, full of potential and figuring himself out as a basketball player. I am very happy for him."

The sophomore from Berlin, Germany, sat out last season and made his debut in an 88-69 loss at Washington State on Nov. 10. He finished with only two points, three rebounds and two blocks against the Cougars, but netted 13 points with eight rebounds and four blocks in the first half alone versus Cal State Northridge. He added 14 points with nine rebounds and three blocks in the second half.

Seiferth made 9-of-16 field goal attempts with four dunks, and also sank 11-of-17 free throws. The Eagles trailed by four at the half and two points early in the second half before Northridge went on a 20-6 run to drop EWU to 0-2 on the season.

In two games, Seiferth averaged 14.5 points, 10 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game with one steal. He made 56.3 percent of his shots from the floor, and 64.7 percent from the free throw line. He had 11 total offensive rebounds.

"That has to be an outstanding confidence builder for him," said Hayford after the game. "If we can get that kind of play from inside, that is something we can really build on.''

Eastern, picked to finish third in the Big Sky by the coaches and sixth by the media, was one of six winless teams after the opening weekend of play. The only league victories were against lower-division foes, as the Big Sky was 0-10 versus NCAA Division I opponents.
