Even before Washington State fired Paul Wulff and hired Mike Leach, Jim Walden made it clear: the school should not have made a change at head coach.
And then he said it: Mike Leach "is a joke".
That comment, among others, was made during an interview with Jim Moore, a personality on KJR radio in Seattle. Moore blogged about the interview and wrote a column even before the debacle with receiver Marquess Wilson over the weekend.
Walden, a former WSU coach and radio commentator, said "this guy (Leach) represents everything not to do in coaching."
That was a comment in direct reference to how Leach coaches: the "calling out" of players, criticism both in person and in the media, and the use of other colorful words.
"I don't know who this guy is, and I don't care if he goes on to big wins and big seasons. I don't want to be around someone who treats people this way. I can't sort out being a Cougar and being around this guy. I'm proud of the Cougar way and how Cougars operate and the culture of which they are. He's embarrassing my profession. He's taking me somewhere I don't want to go."
