Eastern Beats Concordia 96-70 in Exhibition Game

Posted: Updated:

Senior guard Kevin Winford scored 15 of his game-high 18 points in the first half as Eastern Washington University men's basketball team rolled pass Concordia (Ore.) 96-70 in an exhibition game Sunday (Nov. 4) at Reese Court in Cheney, Wash.

The game does not count in EWU's season record or statistics. The Cavaliers, who were edged by Big Sky Conference member Portland State 96-93 on Friday, are a member of NAIA and the Cascade Collegiate Conference.

Eastern officially opens the season next Saturday (Nov. 10) at 4:30 p.m. at Washington State, the first of six-straight road games to open the season. The Eagles don't return home until Nov. 30 when they host Cal State Fullerton.

"I thought we started out a little sloppy, but once we got through that we looked like the team I have been seeing in practice," said second-year head coach Jim Hayford. "We are going to have a lot of spurts like that because of the youth of this team. Today it just happened in the beginning, but we got a rhythm going and things went well.

Senior forward Collin Chiverton also had 18 points in just 10 minutes of action for the Eagles, as four players scored in double figures. Senior guard Jeffrey Forbes added 15 and 6-foot-10 sophomore Martin Seiferth chipped in a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots.

Freshman forward Venky Jois added eight points, 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Winford added seven assists and junior point guard Justin Crosgile contributed eight assists, nine points and three steals.

Chiverton, whose mother passed away this past week, scored 14 of his points in the second half in just six minutes of action. He was the Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year last year as a transfer from City College of San Francisco.

"Kevin gave us huge bursts in the first half and Chiverton gave us an equal boost in the second half," added Hayford. "And Martin gave us a good game on the inside."

Eastern made 48 percent of its shots from the field, including 14-of-41 3-point attempts for 34 percent. The Eagles held the Cavaliers to 37 percent shooting for the game and had a 51-35 rebounding advantage.

Winford and Forbes combined to score 25 of EWU's 47 first-half points as the Eagles led 47-26 at intermission. Jois had six points and nine rebounds in the first half.

Concordia led by four early, but the Eagles used a 7-0 run to take a 25-19 lead, as Winford scored five of EWU's points in the run. Winford hit another basket to give the Eagles a 32-23 advantage, then Parker Kelly hit a three to put the Eagles up 35-23.

A 3-pointer by Forbes gave EWU its biggest lead of the half at 47-26 with four seconds remaining. He then hit a three to open the second half and the rout was on. The Eagles led by no less than 20 the rest of the way and by as many as 32 at the 5:23 mark.
