Austin Rehkow hit a remarkable 67-yard field goal to send Central Valley's game against Shadle into overtime on Thursday. But lost in all the bright lights and SportsCenter hubbub is Shadle quarterback Brett Rypien.

All Rypien did was break his own Greater Spokane League record for most passing yards in a single game (577 yards), and then follow that up by breaking the GSL record for most passing yards in a single season. And he's just a sophomore.

Rypien, the nephew of NFL MVP and Spokane native Mark Rypien, became the first local quarterback to throw for more than 500 yards in a game, beating his old record set earlier this season of 483 yards. He also set a state record with that many yards – no small feat.

Even more surprising about Rypien's performance – and the one against University earlier this season – is that his team lost. Central Valley won 62-55 in overtime.

Losing is a hard pill to swallow, especially when you have such a draw-dropping performance such as that one. But good things are in store for the sophomore. He has two more seasons to set new records and win more games – as he certainly will.
