SPOKANE, Wash. -
Gonzaga Prep is now the only unbeaten team in the Greater Spokane League. The Bullpups beat Mead Thursday night 33-27 in a game televised on SWX.
Prep came out strong at the start, going up 21-6 in the first quarter.
Mead fought back to tie the game at 27 in the fourth quarter. But Griffin Hare scored on a three-yard touchdown run to put the Bullpups up by 6 with two minutes to play. On the final play of the game Mead's Gunnar Kayser threw up a desperation pass to Danny Mattingly in the end zone, but Trevor Cote came up with the interception, sealing the win for Prep.
"[Mead is] a great team – nothing but good stuff to stay
about them," said sophomore quarterback Nick Wood, who came in for an injured Zach
Bonneau. "We just played our hearts out."
"Mead is a great football team and we just came out on
the right end tonight," said coach Dave McKenna. "We just preach one game at a
time. It's a big win for us in 2012, yet it's just another win."
Gonzaga Prep improved to 5-0 on the season, and Mead dropped to 4-1 – a half game ahead of Central Valley, who plays Lewis & Clark (2-2) on Friday.
