First place Suns ready to prove they belong against Kennewick

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Friday night at 7:00 p.m. is a great in-town rivalry game on SWX. The Kennewick Lions and Southridge Suns clash at Lampson Stadium. For Southridge, it has not always been pretty. At times, a bit ugly. However, winning is winning, and at 2 and 0, the Suns are a surprise first place team in the Mid-Columbia Conference 3A Division.

"It's cool that we get to be 2 and 0. We don't take for granted the fact that we could have very easily been 0 and 2. But you know what, the kids played really hard each week and they deserve those wins," said Tony Reiboldt, Southridge head coach.

With wins over Richland and Sunnyside the Suns are ready to turn their attention to in-town rival Kennewick in week three. While the Suns first two games this season have been close, a two point win over Richland and four point win over Sunnyside, their recent games against Kennewick have been anything but. In fact, over the last three meetings, the Lions have outscored by the Suns 109 to 27.

"They've had Loftus, and they've had Leavitt. They've had great athletes at quarterback, and they've had great athletes around them. They've lost quite a few of those players," said Brody Samples, senior center.

"They've had size over us, and the skill players that they've had have just out beat our skill players in the past years. I think this year if we can shut down both Ramos and Simpson, those are the two guys we're going to key on. I think we can take them out this game," added Clay Henderson, senior middle linebacker.

The Lions are also undefeated so far this season, with a record of 1-0-1. Expectations were mixed for Southridge coming into the season. A win over the Lions would help prove that the Suns are for real.
