Washington State pulled off the first win of the Leach era on Saturday, thanks in large part to one special play from the special teams.
At the end of the first half junior kicker Andrew Furney lined up for a 60-yard field goal and drilled it right down the middle. It was the second-longest kick in school history, second only to Jason Hanson's 62-yard field goal in 1991 against UNLV.
With just a four-point win, Furney's score turned out to be an important play. Leach joked about it – or rather, he joked with the reporter who asked the question about it – after the game.
"I thought it was good, what were your impressions," Leach quipped. "You've evidently seen a lot more 60-yard field goals than I have because I haven't seen very many. I'm not sure this isn't the first one that I've seen live.
"He hit it in pre-game, but even then it's tough because it's got to go a long way and you have to get it up high."
Washington State takes their 1-1 record to Las Vegas to play UNLV on Friday. The Runnin' Rebels are fuming after a 17-14 loss to Northern Arizona of the Big Sky Conference. Friday's game will start at 6 p.m. on ESPN.
