Americans have decisions to make with six 20-year-olds

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The Tri-City Americans hit the ice hard during Thursday's practices for main camp. One of the storylines to keep an eye on is the 20-year-old situation.

Currently there are six 20-year-olds in camp: Justin Feser, Patrick Holland, Derek Ryckman, Jesse Mychan, Drydn Dow and Jordan Messier. By WHL rules you can only carry three 20-year-olds on the roster during the regular season. SWX spoke to a few of the 20-year-olds about the situation.

"You try not to think about it but it's always in the back of your mind. You know we're all friends here. We're all teammates but you know you're trying to fight for that spot so it's a little awkward," said Derek Ryckman, Americans defenseman.

"It's definitely a tough situation, some tough competition but all you can do is go work hard and give it your best every time you're on the ice and I'll let the chips fall where they may," said Jordan Messier, Americans forward.

"Three spots just kind of unlucky but everybody is going to push for a spot and do what they can do to stay on the team," team captain Justin Feser said.

The deadline to cut it down to three 20-year-olds is October 14th. Justin Feser is the captain so he appears to be safe. Patrick Holland is expected to go to the AHL (Hamilton Bulldogs). That still leaves four players competing for two spots.
