Team Red Skates Past White

Team Red, led by veterans Mike Aviani, Mitch Holmberg and Collin Valcourt, earned a 5-1 win on Sunday afternoon in the Spokane Chiefs annual Red-White scrimmage in front of 2,877 fans in the Spokane Arena. The Red-White game signified the end of the Chiefs' Annual Fall Camp.

Aviani and Valcourt had a goal and two assists while Holmberg and Dustin Gorgi, a 17-year-old rookie from Red Deer, Alberta, added a goal and assist.

"I thought it was a good camp," Aviani said. "Our team worked really hard out there and the young guys really impressed me."

"I thought that today's pace was higher than main camp," Holmberg said.

The rosters featured 46 players including four goaltenders and 42 skaters. Sixteen players off last year's playoff roster participated with veterans Mac Engel, Marek Kalus and Liam Stewart all being held out due to injury.

"I think we wanted to get a feel for the game and let the young guys know what the league is about," Holmberg said.

"We had that going througout the week; we had the veteran guys going hard and the young guys were definitley following suit. I think it was a good camp altogether. Everyone was up there skill wise no matter who they were playing against," Holmberg said.

The first goal of the scrimmage was scored by Red's Valcourt as he tapped in a Holmberg pass to finish off a three-on-two rush at 15:37 of the first. Aviani had the second assist.

Rookie defenseman Daniel Wedman snapped home a shot from the left circle with just 38-seconds left in the first to stake Red to a 2-0 lead through 20-minutes.

Aviani pushed the advantage to 3-0 just 54-seconds into the second and Holmberg scored at 5:53 for a 4-0 lead.

Blake Gal, a 20-year-old entering his fifth season as a Chief, put White on the board with their lone goal 8:10 into the third. Fellow overage Dylan Walchuk had the assist.

Gorgi made it a 5-1 final for Red at 17:31.

White's Trevor Martin, a ninth round selection in 2011, stopped all 25 shots he faced in 29:58. He was replaced by Garret Hughson who stopped 14 of 15 shots. Tyson Verhelst, the Chiefs' third round pick in 2012, started for Red and was 14-18 in save opportunities. Nineteen-year-old veteran Eric Williams was 11-12 in relief.

Spokane has six pre-season games over a three week span, including a pair of games next weekend in Everett.

"We want to practice good habits. We are going to get into game mode now," Avaini said about the upcoming week of practice.

Spokane will open the 2012-13 regular season campaign in Kennewick versus the Tri-City Americans on September 22nd. Bud Light Opening night in the Spokane arena is scheduled for Saturday, September 29th versus Tri-City.
