Tri-City takes final series versus Yakima

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, Wash. --  Another solid night at the plate and stellar pitching gave the Tri-City Dust Devils a 3-2 victory over the Yakima Bears Sunday night at Gesa Stadium. The win gives the Dust Devils the series victory over the Bears in what could be the final meeting between the East Division rivals.

Yakima (5-7 second half, 26-24 overall) starting pitcher Austin Platt (0-2) pitched well in his second professional start, allowing three runs on ten hits over six innings. The 20-year-old escaped jams throughout his outing, getting help from his defense with five double plays on the night. However, with the game tied at two in the bottom of the sixth inning, Dust Devils (5-7, 23-27) first baseman Miguel De Leon came up with the bases loaded and made sure the opportunity didn't go to waste, delivering a run-scoring single to plate the game-deciding run. The run batted in was De Leon's 23rd of the season, giving him the team lead, as he celebrated his 21st birthday Sunday.

The run support for Dust Devils starting pitcher T.J. Oakes (1-1) didn't go to waste as the righty earned his first professional win. Oakes allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits over six innings. Reliever Seth Willoughby (Sv, 4) came on for the ninth inning and earned his fourth save of the season, throwing a scoreless inning.

Tri-City catcher Tom Murphy extended his hitting streak to a Northwest League season-high 16 games, going 2-for-4 on the night. Murphy was joined by outfielder Francisco Sosa and second baseman Zach Osborne as Dust Devils with multiple hits on the night, going 2-for-4 and 2-for-3 respectively. As a team Tri-City tallied 11 hits for the second consecutive game, both of which were wins.

The Dust Devils will continue their home stand Monday night as the Vancouver Canadians make their lone trip to Gesa Stadium this season to begin a five-game series. It will be Coca-Cola Monday at the ballpark, with all 22-ounce Coke products on sale for one dollar all game long. The rematch between the teams from the 2011 Northwest League Championship Series will open with lefty Roberto Padilla as the starting pitcher for Tri-City and righty Javier Avendano starting for Vancouver. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m. and gates open at 6:15 p.m.
