By Tri-City Dust Devils

The Tri-City Dust Devils lost the series opener in the final series between the Yakima Bears and Dust Devils at Gesa Stadium, 6-2. Tri-City tallied eight hits on the night, but struggled to turn them into runs against Yakima, the pitching staff with the lowest earned run average in the Northwest League.

Dust Devils starting pitcher Shane Broyles (3-2) lasted 4 2/3 innings for Tri-City in his sixth start of the season, allowing four runs on nine hits. Broyles worked out of several tough situations with runners on base, but was able to keep the game close, striking out five and not surrendering a walk. New Dust Devils reliever Angel Reyes made his debut for the team, striking out three batters over 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Tri-City catcher Tom Murphy was 1-for-4 on the night, extending his hitting streak to 14 games, tying the Northwest League high for consecutive games with a base hit this season. Murphy is now batting .311 this season. Outfielder Francisco Sosa hit a solo home run in the ninth inning to cut the Bears' lead to four, but the Dust Devils were unable to finish the rally as Sosa ended the night 2-for-4. First baseman Miguel De Leon drove in the other Tri-City run on the night, going 1-for-3.

Yakima starting pitcher Alex Carreras (6-4) earned his sixth win of the season and second against Tri-City, allowing one run on five hits over six innings. He was backed by five triples from the Bears' offense, including two from outfielder Mike Lang.

Game two of three between the Dust Devils and Bears is Saturday night at Gesa Stadium as Tri-City tries to even up the final series between the East Division rivals this season. There will be a post-game fireworks show at the ballpark, thanks to Yoke's Fresh Markets. Starting on the mound for Tri-City will be righty Tyler Gagnon while lefty Daniel Watts is the starting pitcher for Yakima. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m. and gates open at 6:15 p.m.
