Sosa Sends Dust Devils Home Happy

Posted: Updated:

By Tri-City Dust Devils

For the second time in five games the Tri-City Dust Devils walked off with a last-inning victory, defeating the Spokane Indians 6-5. Dust Devils outfielder Francisco Sosa hit a sacrifice-fly to right field with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give Tri-City their first win of the second half of the season.

Both teams had several chances late in the game to take the lead and the Dust Devils (1-1 second half, 19-21 overall) were the team to take advantage. Spokane (1-1, 13-27) had the bases loaded with the game tied and one out in the top of the eighth inning, but Tri-City reliever Matt Flemer (1-0) got out of the jam and kept the score even. The Dust Devils responded by loading the bases in the bottom of the same frame, but failed to bring home a run. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, Sosa came to the plate with the Dust Devils in the same situation as before and made sure that the opportunity wasn't wasted, flaring a fly ball to right field that was dropped, to score shortstop Rosell Herrera and secure the one-run victory.

Dust Devils starting pitcher Ben Hughes worked 4 2/3 innings on the mound, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits while striking out three and walking one. The Tri-City bullpen combined to finish the final 4 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits. Flemer then came on for the eighth and ninth innings, earning his first win as a professional.

Indians starting pitcher Abel De Los Santos, in his second start against the Dust Devils this season, threw five innings and allowed four runs on four hits. Reliever Alec Asher (1-2) took the loss for the Indians, his second of the year.

The series and home stand finale for the Dust Devils is Thursday night in the rubber-match against the Indians. It will be Dollars in your Dog Night at Gesa Stadium, meaning with every hot dog purchased there's a chance to win cash! Dust Devils righty Peter Tago will start on the mound while right-hander Eric Brooks gets the start for the Indians. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m. and gates open at 6:15 p.m.
