Dust Devils Downed in Series Finale

By Tri-City Dust Devils

An error in the tenth inning gave the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes the run they needed to defeat the Tri-City Dust Devils 7-6 and end the Dust Devils' four-game winning streak. The loss also snaps the Tri-City winning streak at Gesa Stadium at 10 games.

The Dust Devils' offense once again started the game well, scoring two runs in the first inning and three more in the third to lead 5-1. But the Volcanoes (13-25) would answer back in a big way, scoring five runs in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead. Tri-City (18-20) would tie the game in the seventh inning after second baseman Patrick Hutcheson brought home a run after getting hit by a pitch. Hutcheson ended the night 0-for-3 with two runs batted in. Outfielder Jarod Berggren had a good night at the plate for Tri-City, going 2-for-2 with three walks and a run batted in.

Dust Devils starting pitcher T.J. Oakes lasted 4 1/3 innings on the mound in his sixth start of the season, allowing six runs on seven hits. Righty Chris Dennis came on to relieve Oakes, throwing 2 2/3 shutout innings of relief.

Josh Slaats (0-3) then came in and held the Volcanoes scoreless for the eighth and ninth innings. But, in the tenth, Slaats walked the first two batters of the extra frame. A groundball to first baseman Drew Beuerlein started a potential double-play, but shortstop Zach Osborne misfired on the throw to first, sailing the ball into the first-base dugout, allowing the lead runner to score.

Volcanoes starting pitcher Raymundo Montero went four innings on the mound, allowing five runs on eight hits. Reliever Armondo Paniagua (1-0) earned his first win of the season for Salem-Keizer, throwing two shutout innings.

The Spokane Indians will make their second and final trip to Gesa Stadium Tuesday night as they face the Dust Devils in a three game series. Lefty Roberto Padilla will get the start on the mound for Tri-City with right-hander Connor Sadzeck starting for the Indians.
