Cooper belts Bears to walk-off win in the eleventh

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. -- The Yakima Bears got a 7-6 walk-off win over the Everett AquaSox in the eleventh inning thanks to Shaun Cooper's clutch hit. The Bears snapped a three-game losing streak with the win.

The Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings. Six different batters had a hit in a three-run second inning. In the third inning, Joe Loftus reached on a one-out walk and Michael Lang hit a two-run home run.

Bears starting pitcher Kyle Owings tossed three shutout innings before allowing two runs on two singles and a walk in the fourth inning. Owings was back on the mound in the fifth and he retired the first two batters he faced, but then walked the next three to load the bases. Owings was pulled in favor of Blake Forslund, who gave up a home run to the first batter he faced. The grand slam put the AquaSox up 6-5.

The Bears didn't tie the game until the ninth inning. In the mean time, Forslund finished the fifth and faced three batters in a scoreless sixth. Enrique Burgos pitched a pair of scoreless frames behind Forslund. After RJ Hively pitched the first of two shutout innings, Joe Loftus hit a two-out single up the middle to score Wagner Mateo from second base and tie the game at 6-6. Victor Capellan followed Hively's scoreless tenth inning with a run-free frame in the top of the eleventh inning.

All nine batters in the Bears order had at least one hit as part of a 17-hit outpouring, but that wasn't the case at the start of the home half of the eleventh inning. Kevin Medrano reached on an error to start the inning and was moved to second on a Wagner Mateo single. Shaun Cooper, who started the day 0-for-5, came to the plate and lifted a ball over the left fielder to plate Medrano for the Bears first walk-off win of the season.

Victor Capellan got the win and is now 3-1 on the season. Ronnie Freeman went 4-for-5, Medrano finished 3-for-6 and Mateo, Loftus, and Adam McConnell all had two-hit games.

The Bears and AquaSox finish the series Monday at Yakima County Stadium. Game time is set for 7:05. Left-handed pitcher Alex Carreras will get the start for the Bears against right-handed pitcher Victor Sanchez.
