Tago Carries Tri-City to Victory

By Tri-City Dust Devils

A two-run double from Tri-City Dust Devils first baseman Miguel De Leon in the third inning was all the offense the Dust Devils needed as Tri-City defeated the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 2-1 Friday night at Gesa Stadium. It was the second straight victory for the Dust Devils and their eighth straight victory at home this season.

Dust Devils (16-19) starting pitcher Peter Tago (2-4) had his best outing of the season and impressed the 2,829 in attendance, throwing eight shutout innings for his second win of the season. Tago ended the night allowing three hits while walking three and striking out two. Reliever Seth Willoughby (Sv, 3) came in for the ninth inning and made things interesting, allowing a run. But the righty closed out the game strong, striking out Volcanoes outfielder Andrew Cain with the potential game-tying run on third to earn his third save of the year.

The heart of the Dust Devils' lineup did its part to earn the win, with spots two through five tallying four of the five Tri-City hits on the night. Shortstop Rosell Herrera was 1-for-3 while designated hitter Tom Murphy was 1-for-4, putting his batting average at a team-high .320. De Leon ended the night 1-for-4 with two runs batted in.

Salem-Keizer starting pitcher Chris Stratton (0-1), the 20th overall selection in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the San Francisco Giants, allowed two runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched to take his first professional loss. The Volcanoes bullpen did well, combining for 6 2/3 shutout innings of relief.

The third game of the five game series between Tri-City and Salem-Keizer is Saturday night at Gesa Stadium as the Dust Devils look to win their third straight series at home this season. There will be a post-game firework show, sponsored by HiLine Engineering and Fabrication Inc. The projected starters for the game are right-hander Shane Broyles for the Dust Devils and righty Joe Biagini for the Volcanoes. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m.
