Bears drop Dust Devils on prostate cancer awareness night

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Starting pitcher Blake Perry tossed the first complete game for a Bears pitcher since 2006 in a 6-1 win against the Tri-City Dust Devils at Yakima County Stadium. The Bears won the series 2-1 and improved to 9-7 on the season, giving the squad a three-game lead once again in the Northwest League's East Division.

The 20 year-old Perry started with a 1-2-3 first inning. After back-to-back singles to start the top of the second inning for the Dust Devils, a sacrifice fly gave Tri-City a 1-0 lead, but it also started a string of 21-consecutive batters retired by Perry. The second-year starter for the Bears had that stretch broken up in the ninth when a lead-off single was hit and then a batter reached on the fielder's choice. The 6-foot-5, right-handed Perry then retired the final two batters to seal the victory.

Perry finished with one run allowed on three hits and no walks, while fanning five. The win improved his record to 1-0 in the Northwest League this year. The last Bears pitcher to throw a complete game was Cesar Valdez, who did it on August 21st in 2006. Valdez was also the last Bears pitcher to throw a complete game at Yakima County Stadium, as he lasted the full nine innings at the home field on July 20th of 2006. Perry is the first to throw a complete game in the Northwest League in 2012 and the feat was accomplished only three times in 2011.

All of the Bears scoring took place with the bases loaded. The Bears tied the game in the third inning with a bases-loaded double play ball that pushed Mark Ginther across. The Bears scored again with the bases loaded in the third inning, when Jacob House hit a sacrifice fly to plate Kevin Medrano. The Bears loaded the bases in the eighth and, after a RBI-single by Ronnie Freeman, Danny Poma hit a bases-clearing triple.

The Bears outhit the Dust Devils 11-3 and played error-free baseball throughout. Both Medrano and Jimmy Comerota went 3-for-4. Poma had the only extra-base hit, as he finished 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs.

It was prostate cancer awareness night at Yakima County Stadium. The Bears hosted two special guests - former Arizona Diamondbacks great Luis Gonzalez, and team president and CEO Derrick Hall, who battled prostate cancer last year. Fans were able to get a signed autograph before the game. The two were excited to show their support for such a great cause.

"Our president just recently went through some treatment. So, it's important for us to get out there and tell men about the awareness of it, and just to stay on top of it," Gonzalez said.

"This is one that not only raises money, but it also raises general awareness which is very important. And to be able to help and give back to these fans, give back to the community that we play in. So, I think it's very important that we have events like this at all of our levels," Hall added.

The Bears have won three-consecutive series and start another at Yakima County Stadium Sunday. The 5:35 game will be the first of three for the Bears as they host the Spokane Indians. Right-handed pitcher Jeff Gibbs is expected to make his first professional start against Indians right-handed pitcher Shawn Blackwell.
