Crunch time for organizers of Lamb Weston Columbia Cup

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The Lamb Weston Columbia Cup kicks off four weeks from today. It is crunch time at the Tri-City Water Follies office. Kathy Powell has helped organize the event for six years. She says this is the busiest time of the year.

"We're down to the wire now. We're within 30 days so we're trying to get all of our equipment arranged, we have offices to get down in the park, the fencing. Things that we need to have our crowds down there," Powell said.

More than 1,200 volunteers will help run the 47th Lamb Weston Columbia Cup. With over 75,000 spectators expected, there is still a lot to do to get ready.

"It's very busy because we're trying to make all of the final arrangements. Plus we're getting our ticket packages out the door. People are coming in here to pick up their packages and sponsorship amenities," Powell said.

There will be fourteen hydroplanes racing in this years Columbia Cup. That is the most of any race on the circuit this year. That comes as no surprise to those who organize the event.

"Well of course we have the best race on the circuit. We hear time and time again from our guests who come from all over the country. We even had guests from different places in the world that tell us that they like our event the best," said Rita Rieksts, the event credentials chair.

Powell says sponsorships and attendance continues to go up. It has helped keep ticket prices flat for the last decade and fan interest at an all time high.
