Tough Rhino Mud Run premiers at Horn Rapids County Park

RICHLAND, Wash. -- Saturday  was the first ever Tough Rhino Mud Run. It was held at Horn Rapids County Park in Richland.

Hosted by Northwest Endurance Sports, the event is an intense 5K run. Participants ran, climbed and got down and dirty in the mud. Races went all day, starting at 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Organizers say this kind of event was missing in the Tri-Cities.

"I've seen races kind of like this, not in this area and I just thought we need one of these. People would like this. It appeals to a large audience of people. Not just the runners or people who work out, but people who just want to get off the couch and go have fun and get dirty," said Brandon Lott, NW Endurance Sports Race Director.

"It was challenging. It was challenging for sure. We'll be ready for the next time. Oh yeah, very challenging," added one competitor.

NW Endurance Sports will also be donating a portion of the day's proceeds to the Tapteal Greenway Association. The Tapteal Greenway is a 30-mile corridor along, and including, the Yakima River extending from Kiona Bend at Benton-City to the mouth of the river at Bateman Island in Richland.

SWX will air a special on the race on July 10th.
