SPOKANE, Wash. -

Every year a collection of high school football teams take the field at CenturyLink Field in Seattle to kick off the new season. This year, however, because of a chain reaction turn of events, those games will take place on the east side of the state.

The Emerald City Classic is coming to the red turf at Roos Field at Eastern Washington University on September 1.

The move this year is a result of the fact that Husky Stadium, where the Washington Huskies play is being renovated. For that reason, Washington is slated to play a game at CenturyLink on the same day of the Emerald City Classic. And that is why the WIAA went looking for another field to host eight teams for the yearly event.

Roos Field is perfect for that kind showcase. It will be the first time the Emerald City Classic has been held east of the Cascades.

The games in Cheney feature a 4A GSL showdown in the nightcap. The schedule is as follows:

10 a.m. – Tekoa-Oakesdale vs. Reardan
1 p.m. – Colville vs. Freeman
4 p.m. – East Valley (Yak.) vs. Cheney
7 p.m. – Central Valley vs. Ferris

Any media coverage of the games – Internet or TV – has yet to be determined.
