Whitworth Working to Perfect Art of the Dogpile

SPOKANE, Wash. -

Every day the Whitworth baseball team is making history. Now, the team is in contention for its second-ever national championship – its first at the NCAA D-III level.

The Pirates are flying high after winning the NCAA West Regional last weekend in McMinnville, Ore., punching their ticket to the World Series in Appleton, Wisconsin.

And what Whitworth victory would be complete without a dogpile?

The team is perfecting that art, hoping to do it again someday very soon.

"We're getting better," said coach Dan Ramsay about the dogpile process. "I still get nervous every time, thinking someone is going to get hurt, but yeah, we're getting better at it."

"We still have some work to do, so hopefully we can get another one in here and refine it a little bit," said second baseman Gerhard Muelheims. "We had a couple of guys go down early in the first one. Everybody made it into the pile this time, so that was an improvement, I would say."

"We got a little bit of practice, so it was better," added senior Kevin Valerio. "But I was coming from the outfield, so everyone was already in a big pile. I just jumped on top at the end. It's nice for me because I don't have to have everyone laying on top of me."

The Bucs take on No. 1 Marietta, the defending D-III champions from Ohio, Friday at 5:45 p.m. (PT). That is the first game of four on the first day of the tournament. The six other teams that made it to the D-III finals are Webster, Wheaton (MA), Cortland State, Kean and St. Thomas (MN).
