Experts stress safety to boaters after boat explosion

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash. -- After Monday's boat explosion that severely burned two people, boating safety is back in the spotlight.

Experts are warning new and experienced boaters to understand the mechanics of the engines on their boats before they take off.

Inspections or bringing a expert along is what experts recommend to prevent another accident. "You need to have your batteries checked, they need to be down properly, your gas tank lines need to be in good shape because if you get a leak in your boat one spark and you got an explosion," explains boat technician Kay Metz.

According to Coast Guard there were 93 accidents in Washington last year. 54 people injured and 15 killed. Boating experts say an inspection could cost less than a hundred dollars.
