Whitworth head football coach John Tully has announced the 2012 schedule and the 2012 team captains as his squad heads into the summer break.

The Pirates have added the College of St. Scholastica, a 2011 NCAA Division III playoff participant, to the 2012 schedule which will give Whitworth ten games this fall.

The Bucs will open the schedule with three consecutive road trips. Following the season opener at St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota on September 1st, the team will head to California on back to back weekends for games against Whittier and La Verne. Whitworth's home opener is on September 22nd against Chapman.

The Pirates will open their Northwest Conference schedule on September 29th at Pacific (Ore.). The 2012 Homecoming and Hall of Fame festivities will be part of the October 6th contest against Willamette.

The Pirates four home games in 2012 are: Chapman (Sept. 22), Willamette (Oct. 6), Puget Sound (Oct. 20) and Lewis & Clark (Nov. 10). The only bye on Whitworth's schedule comes on October 27th.

Both St. Scholastica and Whitter will be first-time opponents for the Pirates.

"With three straight road games to start the season, including the opener against a very good team that made the playoffs last year, we face a challenging schedule this fall," said Tully, heading into his 18th year leading the Pirates. "But most important, all ten of our games are against NCAA Division III West Region opponents."

Tully also announced that Ronnie Thomas, Scott Carr and Liam Brown will be team captains in 2012. Thomas was a First Team All-NWC running back in 2011 after leading the league with 1,042 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. Carr was a Second Team All-NWC linebacker who led the Pirates with 9.5 tackles for loss. Brown is heading into his second season as a starter on the offensive line. Thomas and Carr will be seniors in the fall, while Brown will be a junior.

"These three have proven their leadership and led by example in the offseason," Tully said. "All three are ready for the role of team captain."
