Seager's Four RBIs not enough, M's fall 5-4 to Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Flo. – The Mariners held an early three run lead, but failed to hold off the Rays as they surged back to defeat the M's 5-4.

In the first inning, after consecutive strikeouts by Chone Figgins and Dustin Ackley, four straight runners got on base. First Ichiro Suzuki walked, and then Jesus Montero hit an infield single to shortstop. Kyle Seager followed that up by belting a homer to right field to give the M's an early 3-0 lead. Alex Liddi walked, but Justin Smoak struck out after that to end the inning.

After pitching two straight 1,2,3 innings to open the game, Blake Beavan was taken yard by Sean Rodriguez in the third scoring Jose Molina and himself.

Luke Scott led off the bottom of the fourth skying a fly ball between second and first base. The ball struck a wire in the catwalk on the ceiling of Tropicana Field and that along with some miscommunication between Liddi and Ackley allowed Scott to reach safely, crediting him with an infield single. After a BJ Upton fly out and a Will Rhymes single, Molina doubled to deep right, scoring Scott and Rhymes and also giving the Rays their first lead of the ballgame, 4-3. Molina reached third on a passed ball by Montero, but Beavan retired the next two batters to hold the deficit at one.

Seager started off the sixth with his second home run of the game, giving him four RBIs on the night and knotting up the score.

Scott responded to Seager in the bottom of the sixth with a deep shot to center field that was in reach of Michael Saunders, but bobbled out of his glove and over the fence making it a home run an putting the Rays back up 5-4.

Ichiro laid down a bunt to get on base in the top of the eighth. After a Montero fly out and a wild pitch that moved Ichiro to second, Seager continued his hot bat with a single to left. Ichiro nearly rounded third but was instructed to hold up. The Rays brought in reliever Joel Peralta, who Liddi worked into a full count up until fouling out behind home plate. Smoak also found himself with a full count and ripped a shot into right field that just didn't carry enough as it was caught in the right field corner for the third out.

Peralta stayed on the hill for the Rays in the ninth and got the save with a 1,2,3 inning

Beavan got the loss as he threw for 5 and 1/3 innings allowing five runs on seven hits. In relief, Erasmo Ramirez gave up one hit and Charlie Furbush gave up none, however, the offense was unable to put any more runs on the board.

James Shields pitched for six innings allowing four runs on five hits and striking out 11, making him 5-0 on the year.

Ichiro had a busy night in right field, making ten putouts, a career high and a club record.

Having already lost the series, the Mariners will look to salvage a win in the final matchup of the three-game series. First pitch is schedule at 10:10 a.m. PDT.
