Since spring practice began it has been a two horse race between Anthony Vitto and the freshman Vernon Adams. But they might ultimately lose the job to Padron, who was granted an additional year of eligibility by way of a medical hardship on Wednesday.
No matter how things end after spring, and ultimately after fall camp, the competition has and will bring out the best in all three players.
"I think spring has had its up and downs, but I also think it's been a great learning process for not only me but Vernon as well," said Vitto. "He, as a redshirt freshman, to have progressed that much is great to see. It pushes both of us to become better. So even though there is only two, it allows us to get so many reps and so much time and experience that ultimately it will benefit us in the long run."
Vitto and Adams will have one last chance to impress coaches and perhaps earn a starting job this weekend. The Eagles play their annual Red-White scrimmage on the red turf at Roos Field on Saturday at 2 p.m. The scrimmage will be televised on SWX throughout the region.
