Mariners Tigers Preview

Posted: Updated:

by Brad Wall

After being at home at Safeco Field for nine straight games, the Mariners will hit the road again for a ten game trip starting with the Detroit Tigers tomorrow.

Seattle (7-10) will be trying to bounce back from being swept by the Chicago White Sox, highlighted by a perfect game thrown on the M's by Chicago Pitcher Philip Humber in Saturday's game. The Mariners are 3-7 in their last ten games, winning the two series they've had against Oakland but losing every other series thus far this season.

The Tigers are 10-6 on the year and are coming off a four-game series with the AL West leading Texas Rangers where they dropped three of the four.

Jason Vargas will take the mound in the first game for Seattle, with his most recent performance being a gem seven inning, one run, four hit and seven strikeout outing. He is 2-1 in four starts with a 2.84 ERA and 19 total strikeouts.

Max Scherzer will be on the hill for the Tigers, who has settled down a bit after a shaky start in his season debut against Boston allowing seven run on eight hits in 2 and 2/3 innings. In two straight road starts against the White Sox and Kansas City Royals, Scherzer went 1-1 throwing for six innings and allowing three runs in each start, including eleven strikeouts against Chicago. He is also slowly declining his ERA, as it was at 23.62 after the Boston game and has moved down to 7.98.

Felix Hernandez will take on Adam Wilk in the second game of the series. Hernandez is coming off his highest quality start against the Indians where he threw eight innings of shutout ball allowing five hits and striking out 12. Unfortunately he was unable to secure the win when closer Brandon League blew his first save of the year allowing two runs in the top of the ninth.

Wilk has lost both of his two starts this season, his most recent allowing two runs on ten hits in four innings against the Rangers. His ERA is 4.0 in nine total innings with six strikeouts.

Capping off the three game series will be Hector Noesi and Rick Porcello. Noesi has been in both extremes of pitching performances with two shaky and quick outings against Texas, but also an eight-inning shutout against Oakland.

Porcello was ripped by the Rangers in his last start, only getting through one inning and allowing eight runs on ten hits. His other two starts against Tampa Bay and Chicago were much more efficient as he threw for at least seven innings in both allowing two runs by the Rays and one by the White Sox.

Seattle, who is opening the season with 18 of first 27 games on the road, will look to increase their consistency at the plate as only Ichiro Suzuki and Kyle Seager are batting over .250. Five of the Mariner's starters are hitting .215 or below, two of those being below .200.

Detroit is led by big bats from Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder, who are both top two on the team in RBIs and hits. Fielder is also batting .317, which is 31st in the league.

Both teams are off tonight, and the series opener will begin tomorrow at 4:05 PDT. The second game is also at 4:05 and the series finale will be Thursday at 10:05 a.m. PDT.
