CWU softball drops pair at Western Oregon

Posted: Updated:
MONMOUTH, Ore. -- Sophomore pitcher Maria Gau (Woodinville, Wash.) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning of game one, but the Central Washington University softball team wasn't able to give her -- or the rest of the Wildcat pitching staff -- much run support in dropping a pair of games to host Western Oregon University on Saturday. CWU fell to the Wolves, 2-0 and 6-3.

Central Washington is now 13-24 on the season and 9-16 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, meaning that the two-time defending conference champions must win their final 11 games of the season in order to finish at .500. Western Oregon, which ended up winning five of six games in the season series between the two schools, improved to 16-21 and 12-12 in the GNAC.

Gau walked two hitters over the first five innings but did not allow a hit over that span. However, a single by Western Oregon's Amanda Evola after a leadoff walk broke up the Wildcats' no-hit bid. However, after a foul out and double steal, Gau was able to induce consecutive fly outs to preserve the 0-0 tie.

CWU, which finished with seven hits in the game, was retired in order in the top of the seventh. Western Oregon then started off the bottom of the inning with a single, and after a fielder's choice, the Wolves' ninth-place hitter, Kendra George, delivered a game-winning two-run home run to center field to give WOU a 2-0 win. The blast marked the third "walk-off" homer against the Wildcats this season.

Senior Bre Thomas (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS) was the only player on either team with more than one hit in the opener, going 2 for 3.

In game two, Central Washington fell behind 6-0 after four innings and was only able to muster a three-run home run by senior Carrina Wagner (Tacoma, Wash./Spanaway Lake HS) in falling to the Wolves, 6-3. It was Wagner's 10th home run of the season, as she drove home Thomas and sophomore Jordan Zurfluh (Adna, Wash.).

Western Oregon scored twice in the first, three times in the third, and once in the fourth to account for its runs.

CWU finished the nightcap with nine hits against Brittany Reeves, including two-hit games from Thomas, Wagner, and junior Elena Carter (Olympia, Wash./Black Hills HS). However, Western Oregon had 11 total hits against three Wildcat pitchers in the game, including a 3 for 4 outing by Evola, a freshman who hit her eighth home run of the season.

Central Washington, which won just 5 of 19 games since its last home games at Gary & Bobbi Frederick Field on Mar. 20, will return home for its next five contests. That home stand begins on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., as the Wildcats face Simon Fraser University (24-10, 17-9 GNAC) in their fourth annual ALS Fundraiser doubleheader.
