UNLV Rallies to Defeat Cougars

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS – UNLV scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to post a 4-3 nonconference baseball victory over visiting Washington State, Saturday.

With the win, the Rebels (9-6) have taken the first-two games in the three-game set with the Cougars (7-5). The series concludes, Sunday with a game scheduled for 1:05 p.m.

Washington State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off UNLV starter Zak Qualls. Nate Blackham and Kyle Johnson opened the game with singles. After Taylor Ard grounded into a double play, Derek Jones singled through the right side to score Blackham.

The Rebels tallied twice against Cougar starter Kyle Swannack in the second, but the Washington State regained the lead with two runs in the fourth.

Jones and Adam Nelubowich delivered back-to-back doubles to tie the game 2-2. After a sacrifice by Tommy Richards, P.J. Jones grounded to first and Nelubowich beat the tag at the plate to give the Cougars a 3-2 advantage.

Washington State freshman relievers Joe Pistorese, Sean Hartnett and Nick LaRoy combined to protect the lead into the eighth inning before Marvin Campbell touched LaRoy for a home run leading off the frame that tied the score 3-3.

Kellen Camus (0-1) relieved LaRoy and recorded two outs prior to yielding a double and back-to-back infield singles that put the Rebels on top 4-3.

Mark Shannon (1-2) pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief to earn the victory while Zack Hartman worked the ninth for his third save.
