SPOKANE, Wash. -
The boys from Valley Christian started out strong and held on long enough to knock off the defending 1B state champions in Thursday's opening game of the State B tournaments in Spokane.
Senior forward Craver Small scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lift his Panthers past Sunnyside Christian 47-40. Sophomore Nick Cox added 10 points and seven rebounds in the win.
Junior Brandon Broersma scored a game-high 16 points for the Knights, who saw their hopes of another state championship evaporate.
The Knights came on strong in the second half, going on a 10-0 run to start the third quarter to cut Valley Christian's lead to one point. But even though the Panthers shot just 11.5 percent from the field in the second half, they could never take the lead
