AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. -

Local favorite boxer Queen Underwood is one step closer to Olympic history. The fighter from Seattle fought Mikaela Mayer in the semi-finals of the women's boxing Olympic Trials on Tuesday night – and won.

The fight went the full four rounds, with Underwood taking the decision 27-20. With the win, she advances in the winners bracket while Mayer now must win three fights in a row to make it to the World Championships in China.

"You only get one shot at this," said Underwood after the fight at Northern Quest Resort and Casino west of Spokane. "It's boxing, it's not a team sport. It's a competitive combat sport, so the mental focus is the area where it's most challenging. Boxing is unexplainable. You just have to be a boxer to find out, truly, how it feels."

The other local favorite at the trials, Alex Love, from Monroe, Wash., tried to score the upset over Olympic favorite Marlen Esparza. But there would be no upset. Esparza defeated Love 22-12. Love now has to fight in the challengers bracket, while Esparza moves into the flyweight final.

"You know, I gave it my full effort," said Love. "I tried to stick best to my gameplan. I obviously felt her a little bit. I didn't win. It was a good fight, and she's a great boxer. But I'm not done yet."
