Chiefs Get By Seattle 5-4

SPOKANE, WA - The Spokane Chiefs defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds by a score of 5-4 in front of 7,810 fans at the Spokane Arena on Friday night, their 31st win of the season. The Chiefs beat the Thunderbirds in back-to-back home games this week, and were led by defenseman Davis Vandane, who had three points on the evening.

Dylan Walchuk continued to have the hot stick for the Chiefs, picking up his 14th point is 16 games with the Chiefs scoring at 14:59 of the first period, using his forehand to lift the puck over Seattle goaltender Calvin Pickard as he skated across the crease. Rookie Cole Wedman picked up the primary assist and Tanner Mort got credit for the other assist in his first game back from injury.

Seattle answered back early in the second period scoring back to back on the power play thanks to a 5-3 advantage. Colin Jacobs and Burke Gallimore scored for the Thunderbirds at 4:17 and 5:03 of the second making it 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

Mike Aviani evened to score back up for the Chiefs, shooting home a rebound at 9:08 of the second off a Colin Valcourt shot, with Vandane getting the secondary assist.

The Chiefs were able to find another go ahead goal off the stick of 18 year old forward Valcourt, who redirected a point shot from Brenden Kichton at 11:17 of the second to give Spokane a 3-2 advantage.

The Thunderbirds evened the score again late in the second period, scoring short handed at 16:54 on a Brendan Rouse breakaway. The game would go into the second intermission tied at three.

Seattle's only even strength goal game at 4:40 of the third on a Brandon Trook shot, giving the Thunderbirds their second lead of the evening.

Fortunately for Spokane they had one last run left in them with Marek Kalus and Wedman scoring back to back goals at 5:47 and 6:22 respectively. Vandane had assists on both goals.

The Chiefs next home game is tomorrow evening against the division leading Tri-City Americans.
