3rd-ranked George Fox Dominates Whitworth

NEWBERG, Ore. – It was too much Hannah Munger and too much of third-ranked George Fox in the Bruins' 75-48 win over visiting Whitworth in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Friday night at the Wheeler Sports Center.

Munger, George Fox's 6-5 post player, scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Bruins improve to 18-0 overall and 9-0 in the NWC. The Pirates fell to 8-10, 4-5.

George Fox led from the opening tip, taking a 10-3 lead on a three-point play by Munger just over six minutes into the game. Munger's layup stretched the advantage to 21-8 before Kendra Knutsen hit a three-pointer for Whitworth. But GFU stretched the lead to as many as 19 points in the first half before taking a 37-20 lead into halftime.

Keisha Gordon's layup two minutes into the second half gave GFU its first 20-point lead (43-22). Whitworth got back within 47-29 on a three-pointer by Lauren Picha and driving layp by Emily Guthrie. But the Bruins stopped the minor Pirate run and opened up with nine straight points and eventually led by as many as 33 points (69-36) with six minutes to play.

Kayla Johnson led Whitworth with 17 points and five rebounds. She was the only Pirate to reach double figures. Lexi Belcher added nine points for the Bucs, who shot 29.6% (16-54) from the field, 21.7% (5-23) from three-point range.

George Fox used its size advantage to outrebound Whitworth 52-26, including a 24-11 edge in offensive rebounds. Megan Arnoldy added 12 points and seven boards for the Bruins and Gordon totaled 11 points and seven rebounds.

Whitworth continues its toughest road trip of the season by visiting 8th-ranked Lewis & Clark on Saturday. That game tips off at 4:00 p.m.
