Some Gonzaga fans know coach Mark Few is an avid fly fisherman. But few know how his passion for the sport was born. Joe Roope does.

Roope operates Castaway Fly Fishing Shop in Coeur d'Alene, and it was he who got Few hooked on the sport of catching fish on hooks dressed up to be insects. The local sports enthusiast took the coach, then an assistant, out on the river for the first time, and the two have been good friends ever since.

Years later, the Castaway Fly Fishing Shop has become a home away from home for a special group Gonzaga basketball fans. When the Zags play away games, this group of fishing junkies – and basketball fans – get together to watch the game and tie a few flies at the same time.
