Spokane, WA—The Spokane Indians announced today their field staff for the 2012 season which is highlighted by the return of manager Tim Hulett. Hulett, the longest tenured manager in Indians history, has compiled a 199-180 record in his five seasons with Spokane, including the 2008 Northwest League Championship.
"I look forward to returning to Spokane for another great season," said Hulett. "The fans, the ballpark, and the organization are all first class, and provide the best environment for winning in the NWL."
New to the Indians staff this year are pitching coach Ryan O'Malley, hitting coach Oscar Bernard, coach Vinny Lopez, and trainer Sean Fields.
Ryan O'Malley spent seven seasons as a pitcher in the Chicago Cubs organization, including 2002 with the Boise Hawks. The right-hander reached the majors for a brief stint in 2006, posting a 1-1 record with a 2.13 ERA. An infielder and pitcher in the minors, Oscar Bernard also played for five seasons in the Cubs organization, spending time with the Boise Hawks in 2004 and 2007. O'Malley and Bernard both coached for the rookie-level Arizona League Rangers in 2011.
Vinny Lopez played collegiately at Westmont and Cal Lutheran where he recorded a .315 career batting average and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. Lopez has an extensive coaching background, including time with the USC Trojans, Kauai Menehunes of the Hawaii Collegiate League, and the Texas Rangers Single "A" affiliate, the Hickory Crawdads.
Sean Fields, a Texas native, enters his third year with the Rangers organization after spending time with the AZL Rangers and Dominican League Rangers. Fields will work in conjunction with Ed Yong, who will return to Spokane for his fourth season as the Indians strength coach.
The Indians open the 2012 season against the Vancouver Canadians on Friday, June 15th at Avista Stadium.
