After Thursday's 10-point win over Air Force, Gonzaga finds itself with a respectable 9-2 record. And with that, Zag fans – and coach Mark Few – has to be pleased, opined play-by-play man Greg Heister.
Breaking down the game and the season so far, Heister and fellow color commentator Richard Fox said Gonzaga is now poised for a great run through conference play.
"The two games you lost are two games you could have won," said Fox, a former Gonzaga big man. "That Illinois game on the road was a game you probably should have won. You had a freak injury to Rob [Sacre's] neck and Gary [Bell Jr.] went out late in the game – or halfway through the second half. Michigan State, you just didn't play all that well in the second half. But largely, you've been consistent and you've gotten better."
Fox said that's the most important takeaway from the non-conference portion of the Zags' schedule up until now. He said freshmen Kevin Pangos and Gary Bell Jr., as good as they were in their first game, are "worlds better now".
The entire team appears more comfortable with their roles, including Sam Dower and Elias Harris.
Gonzaga plays its first conference game Dec. 28 against Portland (catch that game live on KHQ). They play at Xavier on New Year's Eve and then return home for another conference game against Pepperdine on Jan. 5.
