Spokane native Ryne Sandberg hasn't yet been named the new manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, but at least he has the approval of the big man himself, Tony LaRussa.
LaRussa, who decided to retire after leading the team to a World Series victory, said Thursday he believes Sandberg is an impressive candidate to replace him in St. Louis. He said he has heard Sandberg has done a good job in the minor leagues and has paid some "severe" dues.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported the Cardinals were also planning to interview former Red Sox manager Terry Francona, Cardinals third base coach Joe Oquendo, former Gold Glove catcher Mike Matheny, White Sox coach Joe McEwing and Chris Maloney, who is a manager at Triple-A Memphis.
