He is just 15-years-old, but Spokane Valley's Joey Bird is a heckuva stock car racer. The sophomore from West Valley High School was just named the MMRA Baby Grand Class Rookie of the Year, and the West Region points champion for 2011.
Bird, a distant relative of NBA legend Larry Bird, began racing go-karts at the age of eight and made the jump to cars this spring.
"I've watched since I was a little kid," explained Bird. "My uncle raced - he races Northwest Modified. He races against some of the big shots like Greg Biffle. I have just grown up in it and I've always loved it."
Bird, who doesn't even have his driver license yet, won six out of 10 main event races in his first season, running on tracks in Montana, Las Vegas and Spokane.
